Achieving Color Harmony in Your Trim and Siding

The trim might not be the most visible part of your exterior, but nevertheless, it still has a large impact on your home’s curb appeal. Remember: when it comes to exterior design, consistency is key.

Here are some tips on achieving color harmony in your trim and siding:

Using the Color Wheel

The color wheel is a tool used to find out if two colors complement each other. Here’s an overview of commonly used color harmonies:

Analogous colors – On the color wheel, analogous colors or located next to each other and therefore have low contrast. A lot of analogous color combinations are often found in nature. Use them if you want to give your exterior or interior a calming, serene feel.

Complementary colors – If you want to add a bit more personality to your exterior, choose complementary colors for your trim and siding. These colors are located opposite to and contrast with each other on the color wheel. This contrast can add much-needed vibrancy to any dull exterior. However, coordinating complementary colors can be tricky, which is why it’s best to consult an exterior remodeling contractor before the color scheme for your exterior is finalized.

Triad – As the name suggests, triads are three-color combinations made up of a dominant color and two colors from either side of a complementary color. When using triad colors, it’s important to follow the 60-30-10 rule: One shade will be the dominant color, another shade the secondary color, and the third color is to be used sparingly as an accent.

Making Your Exterior’s Colors Last

The curb appeal of your home will diminish as the colors of your siding fade over time. But, by choosing a siding replacement that’s resistant to fading, like James Hardie® siding and trim with ColorPlus® technology, you can make your curb appeal last. To learn more about the benefits of ColorPlus technology, consult an exterior or residential roofing service company.
