Spring Deck Maintenance Tips You Need to Know

There’s so much to love about spring. Aside from the cool breezes and the overall pleasant weather, it is also a time where you can enjoy the outdoors. That said, you’ll want to make sure your deck is ready for the upcoming season. After constant exposure to the winter weather, it might be in need of much-needed care and attention. Let Timberland Exteriors share with you some maintenance tips to consider.

Clear Out All Debris

Because your deck has been exposed to the elements over the last few months, expect some leaves, twigs, and other small debris scattered on and around it. Clearing them out should help you get started with your spring deck maintenance. This will be relatively easy, as most debris can be swept off properly. However, some of it could be stuck in between the deck boards. For this, use a putty knife to dislodge it. If you want to save yourself the trouble of crouching down and clearing them out, we recommend buying a pole-type groove and crevice cleaner.

Wash and Clean Your Deck

Once the loose pieces of debris have been removed, it’s time to wash the surface of your deck. Use a power washer to remove the deep-seated debris embedded on the surfaces thoroughly. Set the machine on weak or medium power to prevent the water from damaging your deck’s surface. This can be done repeatedly to remove the layers of debris until your deck’s surface is clean.

If you’re going to use a cleaning product, make sure to use one that’s appropriate for your deck. Depending on the type of wood, the cleaning agent will lighten its color as it loosens the debris sticking to the surface. Apply the cleaning agent using a synthetic bristle brush attached to a long handle while wearing protective gloves and clothing.
