Top Tips When Choosing the Right Window Size

Your new windows should suit your home’s interior and exterior. This means selecting the right style, color and size. When it comes to size, it’s crucial for your contractor to visit your home and measure existing window openings. Accurate measurements ensure your replacement windows will fit your space.

If you’re installing new construction windows, here are a few things to consider to figure out the appropriate window size for your home.

Standard Window Sizes

You can ask your home builder or remodeler to use standard window size openings for your property. Doing so reduces project lead times and eliminates the long wait typical for custom-sized windows. Windows in standard sizes are usually easier to manufacture, so they can be delivered within a shorter time.

Orientation

The location of your window can affect the amount of heat that enters your home. If you live in a cold climate, you can place the window in an area where it’s directly facing the sun. This will make it easier for your HVAC system to heat your home in winter. However, this can be a problem in summer when your space receives too much heat, so make sure to install eaves and awnings to reduce the heat that passes through the window during the warmer months.

Thermal Mass

Building materials absorb heat energy, and this is referred to as thermal mass. Concrete and bricks have high thermal mass, meaning they don’t absorb heat too quickly. If your home is made with these materials, you can choose larger windows. But if your home is made with lightweight materials, which typically have lower thermal mass, you should get smaller windows.
