4 Tips on Getting an Accurate Siding Estimate

With projects like vinyl siding installation, you’ll want it to be as predictable as possible. Estimates, as the name suggests, are not set in stone and can spring surprises when you least expect them. In today’s post, Timberland Exteriors share some tips on how to get an accurate estimate for our siding replacement project.

  1. Ask for multiple quotes. It’s a good practice to compare and contrast options before settling on a choice. However, it’s far too common for people to compare prices and settle for the lowest estimate. While it can be beneficial for your finances, you might not be getting the best deal. Unscrupulous individuals are known for cutting corners just to get the lowest estimate — this means you’ll probably get low-quality siding, installed by unskilled installers, with minimal warranty coverage. Take the time to compare the terms and conditions, the bill of materials and whether or not the final amount is calculated correctly, and have the contractor apply corrections as needed.
  2. Size impacts cost. The size of your home — the exterior wall areas, to be specific — will drive the cost of the project. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing the cost of your estimate against a similar project done on a different house. Your house may have more square footage compared to the other, which means it will require more materials and labor, therefore a higher price.
  3. Don’t skimp on quality. Siding typically lasts about 15 to 30 years, which means you will have to live with the results of your project for that long. This is why you should always get the best that your budget will allow. The difference in cost can pay off years later, as more premium siding is generally more durable, which may save you from potentially costly repairs.
  4. The seasons can affect the project cost. The spring and summer seasons are the busiest seasons for contractors, and typically command a more premium rate. It is possible to get a lower estimate by simply moving the project to a later (or earlier) date. While siding installation is generally not recommended in the winter season because materials tend to become brittle, it is possible to do so during mid-to-late fall, or during the first week of spring.
