Factors That Affect a Window’s Age

Even the sturdiest windows are bound to fail at a certain point in time. The key to avoiding serious problems is to have an old window replaced before it gets to that point. Fortunately, window and residential roofing service experts say that it’s possible to have a close estimate of when a window has reached that age by looking at certain factors.

Friction

Is opening or closing your window a bit more difficult than it used to be? Over time, friction in a window’s moving components will increase the amount of wear and tear it has to endure. This can drastically reduce your window’s expected lifespan, which means you may have to replace it soon.

Condensation

If you ask any exterior remodeling contractor, they will tell you that new windows do not normally show signs of condensation. The moisture can then cause moisture-related problems, compromising the window’s structural integrity and speeding up the aging process.

Drafts

Sometimes, the issue isn’t with letting water in, but letting outdoor air seep through small gaps in the window. Drafts are a major cause of poor energy efficiency, and the longer a drafty window stays, the more energy is wasted because of air leaks. Have them replaced ASAP and you’ll see an improvement in your monthly electricity bill.

Bad Weather

Harsh external conditions have the biggest effect on a window’s aging process. If your area experiences plenty of storms or hailstorms, you can expect windows to last a lot shorter than if they were in an area with milder climate.  Hail storm damage restoration experts say a possible way to mitigate this is to pick windows that offer better wind and impact resistance.
