House Wraps: Is it Necessary for Siding Installation?

If you’ve been considering vinyl siding installation as part of your upcoming home remodeling project, then you’ve probably heard the term ‘house wrapping’. The way most contractors phrase it makes it sound optional, but it’s actually a necessary part of your new exterior cover.

In this post, Timberline Exteriors discusses everything you need to know about house wrapping.

What’s a House Wrap?

A house wrap is a water-resistant barrier that, as its name suggests, is wrapped around your home to serve as a moisture and air barrier. It’s installed before the siding and serves as additional weatherproofing; a kind of final barrier before moisture gets into the wall itself.

Are House Wraps Necessary?

The short answer is yes. Older homes benefit greatly from house wraps, helping preserve its natural architecture and increases the time frame between storm damage restoration. Some codes also require house wraps before you can install any house cover. Even if the local house codes don’t require it, it still benefits your home greatly since the wrap serves as a radiant barrier that can help reduce your home’s heating and cooling costs.

Are there Different Types of House Wraps?

The ‘standard’ house wrap is an asphalt-impregnated felt paper, but there are many alternatives to choose from these days. Liquid wraps are rising in popularity since they are easy to apply, while OSB standboards are a great choice if you want additional waterproofing underneath the siding.

Finally, there are polyolefin fabrics. These plastic house wraps are thinner but provide the same waterproofing and radiant barrier as its counterparts.
