Soffit and Fascia: What’s the Difference?

Soffit and fascia are typically part of new roof installation projects. Together, they help prevent mold and mildew that often result from moisture issues in your home’s rafters. Moreover, they are also used to improve air ventilation.

Due to these similar functions, soffit and fascia are commonly referred to as one. However, these two components are different from each other as they serve separate purposes.

Timberland Exteriors™, a local expert in window installation service and roof replacement, discusses the importance of soffit and fascia. We also share more details about their distinctions from each other.

Purpose

Soffit is the underside of a flight of stairs, a projecting cornice, or any element of a building such as an arch. In roofing, soffit is the horizontal piece of vinyl or aluminum covering the underside of the roof’s overhang. It is typically used to close the space beneath the eave.

Meanwhile, fascia is the board that runs along the edges of a structure where elements, such as gutters, are attached. Its main purpose is to act as a barrier between the edge of the roof and the outside. It’s quite helpful in protecting the roof from weather damage.

Materials and Durability

Soffit is commonly made from vinyl or aluminum, and it’s available in a range of colors to match the home’s siding. Fascia boards, on the other hand, are typically made of wood. However, they can also be manufactured from plastic and aluminum.

Since both of these components are constantly exposed to moisture, they can eventually show signs of water damage. When this happens, it’s important to replace the damaged part immediately. Make sure to include the soffit and fascia in your regular roof inspections too. This way, you can address issues before they affect other parts of your roofing.
