The Most Common Door Problems During Winter

The colder months may be something most people look forward to. During this season, however, your property can be too vulnerable to damage. It is highly probable for your home features not to operate properly due to snow buildup and harsh weather events. In today’s blog, your home remodeling contractor shares the four most common issues doors experience during the cold.

  • Fading Colors. Door colors tend to fade when the material is continuously exposed to inclement weather. Experts note that the best way to address this is to coat the door with paint that is moisture-resistant. You can also invest in a fiberglass door that’s designed to resist fading.
  • Icy Locks. This occurs when door locks accumulate too much moisture that then freezes. This can prevent your entry and patio doors from operating the way they should. An easy way to unfreeze the lock is to heat the key and use that to melt the ice.
  • Misalignment. Exterior home remodeling services suggest that misalignment is most common with wooden replacement windows and doors. Wood is prone to expansion depending on the weather. It can also soak up moisture if the door is regularly exposed to wet conditions. The most effective solution for this one is by replacing your doors with a material that doesn’t absorb as much moisture.
  • Worn out weatherstripping. Weatherstripping is designed to block drafts from getting into your property and they get worn over time, especially during this season. If by any chance you suspect that there are drafts around your door, consider installing new weatherstripping immediately to save on heating bills. However, if your door is significantly old and worn out, it’s better to simply get a new door with fresh weather stripping for updated functionality.
