What to Consider When Budgeting for a New Deck

As you plan out your new deck construction, a few factors must be considered. Depending on your needs and preferences, you might be going for a more elaborate design for your deck, which means the choice of materials alone can be a bit pricey for your budget. To help you out, leading general construction company Timberland Exteriors shares what you need to consider:

Deck Flooring

Although different types of deck flooring are available, one of the most common is pressure-treated wood and composite lumber. A few hardwoods are also popular, including cedar, ipe, and Douglas fir. But if you’re going for a more cost-effective material, consider pressure-treated wood as it can be priced around 20 to 30 percent lower than composites and hardwood.

However, it helps to be mindful of the price changes as the difference can sometimes be just as little as five percent. If there’s not much price difference in your area, it may be better to invest in hardwood or composite lumber. They offer better benefits than pressure-treated wood, especially in terms of rot resistance and longevity, without costing too much in maintenance.

Deck Framing

If you’re not building a deck on ground level, it should have the right kind of support framing that uses concrete footers, support posts, beams, joists, and ledger boards. Of course, even ground-level decks will still require framing, but concrete blocks are typically used instead of posts. Either way, you’ll need to work with a home remodeling contractor who has the right knowledge and experience in building decks so that you can be sure that your new deck uses the right materials and is built on top of a solid frame.

Deck Railing

You’ll find that there are nearly countless design choices for railing. Whether you choose the classic or contemporary options, they can also be made from the same materials as your deck flooring. Some will also cost more than others, but these materials usually offer better rot and insect resistance, which means you won’t spend much on routine maintenance.
