Is Your Asphalt Roof Susceptible to Wind Damage?

Asphalt roofs are sturdy, long-lasting and reliable. They are designed to resist various elements, including wind. However, certain factors can make one asphalt roof more wind-resistant than another.

In this post, Timberland Exteriors discusses some of the variables that can affect your asphalt roof’s susceptibility to wind damage.

Quality of Roofing Materials

High-quality shingles have better wind resistance than poorly manufactured ones, so make sure to use only roofing materials from trusted companies. Also, take note that shingles are classified into different categories based on their level of wind resistance. For instance, class D asphalt shingles are tested to withstand winds of up to 90 mph.

Apart from the shingles, other roofing components must also be considered. Sheathing thickness is crucial because it determines nail strength, which consequently affects shingle strength. Generally, thicker sheathing means greater wind resistance.

The nails are also another vital component in your roofing system. Ensure they’re high-quality and the correct type and size were used to secure the shingles.

Rooftop Installations

Any equipment or structure installed on your roof increases the risk of wind damage. Satellite dishes, vents, chimneys, HVAC equipment and other rooftop installations can affect the aerodynamics of your roof. Wind can rip off these things, fling them on your roof and cause extensive damage. Limit the installations or attachments on your roof. For necessary installations, make sure they’re attached firmly to your roof.

Environmental Factors

The wind can uproot trees and branches in your surrounding environment and hurl them on your roof. Trim them regularly to minimize this kind of hazard or remove them completely if possible.

You can always count on Timberland Exteriors to provide you with superior roofing services and excellent workmanship. To schedule a consultation, fill out this contact form or call us at 651-439-1760 (Maplewood) or (218) 849-6675 (Detroit Lakes).
