Storm Damage ABCs: The Essential Steps You Should Take

Your roof could sustain damage during a storm, especially if it was a severe weather event or your roof is old. The best way to know the condition of your roof is to contact a roofer for a proper inspection. While you’re waiting for the contractor, here are three essential steps you should take to prevent further damage and more problems.

1. Assess the Roof Damage

Once the weather improves, walk around your property and do a visual check of your roof. You can use a pair of binoculars to see if there are missing or loose shingles, bald patches or other visible damage. Take a look at your gutters too. See if there is standing water or if it has also sustained damage. Don’t forget to take pictures and videos of your house and the affected components. You’ll be able to use these when filing an insurance claim.

2. Begin the Repairs

Hire a roofer to perform all the necessary repairs. Since they have the skills and equipment to fix your roof safely and properly, it’s best to leave the job to professionals. But since you may need to wait a while for your contractor to arrive at your house, you can do a few temporary fixes to prevent further damage to your property. For instance, cover your furniture with plastic if you can’t move them away from a leak. You should also place buckets under leaks so that the water won’t damage your flooring.

3. Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company about the damage to your home. They’ll likely provide you with instructions and send an insurance adjuster to inspect your property. The findings of the insurance adjuster will then determine how much will be covered by your policy.
